this whole argument is kind of bullshit. They come from worlds where magic works differently, so there would be universe-shattering paradoxes going on. however, assuming that each has access to the way of magic of both universes, and some time to practice opening the new magical doors, then i would say that Gandalf would win because it seemed like he had less to work with in Middle Earth, yet he was still a badass, so with new powers with a wand and shit, he would easily kick ass.

Unfortunately for your logic, Gandalf must be the more powerful of the two. He is a maiar, a minor god that existed before the world came to be. Dumbledore, however powerful a mortal being he is, is still mortal, and cannot defeat Gandalf, who is immortal. Also, the elder wand is no aid to dumbledore in this situation, because gandalf can destroy it with a simple phrase, or use one of his words of power, which would destroy dumbledore. in a fight, Gandalf beats dumbledore every time.

I would def agree with thewhole Gandalf winning because he's a maiar, but as for Iluvatar letting him use his full powers I have two comments. one, I dont think he would need that much power to defeat dumbledore, what whith his words of power and ability to destroy dumbledore's wand like he did to saruman's staff. Two, I dont think it is Iluvatar who decides what Gandalf can or cannot do, I believe Iluvatar never directly interferes with the happenings of middle earth, and that manwe is the one who can order gandalf, being the one who knows best the will of Iluvatar.

Gandalf can't just come back to life. That was a one-time deal. Gandalf is just as mortal as Dumbledore is, even if he is a Maia. Gandalf is more powerful than Dumbledore, but Gandalf limits his powers. He always did, and he probably would stay true to that principle even if he was fighting Dumbledore. Meanwhile, Dumbledore's powers are amplified by the Elder Wand. So they are probably both about equal in power. Dumbledore wouldn't use the Unforgivable Curses under any circumstance. However if they fought, I would have to assume that Gandalf would win, because he is a Maia. However, you can't just assume that Gandalf would be able to “come back” and kill Dumbledore. Illuviatar ressurected him to overthrown Saruman and continue his mission. He wouldn't do it just so Gandalf could kill somebody. Oh, and Dumbledore planned his death. He could've killed Snape, but he had a plan. He died willingly, not because Snape was more powerful than him.

Honestly, if Dumbledore was half as powerful as you Potter fanatics (I’m a fan, but not a huge one by any means) would like to think, then why didn’t he face Voldemort and destroy him in his infinite wisdom and power? There are a lot of problems with this comparison. Gandalf, as “Olorin” in the Silmarillion is a Maia, basically a fairly wimpy lesser god. He is a “wizard” in the sense that he’s wise, or at least old and in possession of a lot of obscure knowledge. He’s good with fire, but he also wears Narya, the ring of fire – one of the 3 Elven rings of power. At no point does Tolkien make clear what magic specifically Gandalf can do. On the other hand, Dumbledore is capable of just about any magic that can be done, though he chooses to avoid dark magic. In terms of what they are specifically known to do, Dumbledore has a much MUCH greater known repertoire than Gandalf, who could retaliate with… what exactly? While Gandalf is immortal, his physical form can certainly be defeated, and was at least twice in the Lord of the Rings (once by the balrog, once by Saruman). 
Tolkien’s magic and Rowling’s magic are two different things as well..

The whole thing is, Tolkien doesn’t get into so much detail about specific spells as Rowling. And, the Balrog didn’t defeat Gandalf, he ended up beating it.

gandalf would win yes, but you need to learn about both things before you go spouting off with uneducated comments.  Dumbledore WOULD have killed voldemort, but there was one problem, until all of the horcrux were found, voldemort would continue coming back.  Dumbledore took the curse of the first horcrux in his hand and it was going to kill him anyways.  Therefore he allowed himself to be killed to give harry and company more time to find the other crux’s and allow snape to look as if he is a loyal follower of voldemort, to gather inside info on where the crux’s are and so on.  Dumbledore knew harry would eventually find the other horcruxes do to him being mentally linked to voldemort’s soul.  Dumbledore’s time was up even before he died, and to die voldemort had to kill off the piece of his soul that was in harry.  Now learn to do your research before you talk of things you know nothing about.

The traditional wizards my friend has staffs and not wands, J.K transformed the wizards in fairies with this stupid story of wands.

Read the other commentaries above and then you will see how MUCH Gandalf is powerful, he kill’s every powerful enemy in The Lord of The Rings, about his powers and skills, read the Hobbit, so Dumbledore is so powerful that he dies by a potion teacher, his magic shield to protected Hogwarts was broken, none of Gandalf magics was broken by anyone, so if you really read the books, then you do not understand anything.

Jus so people know, Avade Kedavra attacks the soul, not the body. Therefore Gandalf is immune to Avada Kedavra, his soul is immortal, But his body is prone, in which Gandalf has many Protective spells, Such as the The Flame of Arnor – as we see when he fights the balrog, such a beats couldn’t harm him when he used the spell. Gandalf also CHOSE to fall into the ravine with the Balrog, he could have easily pulled himself up, but chose to fall. Gandalf is a very powerful wizard, whop unforetunately we don’t see in action as we should. But considering he can break weapons with no problem, deflect spells with his hands, and is immune to fire spells, another expmple of where saruman fires a blast of fire at him and no damage is done. Gandalf would hands down win.

Dumbledore is powerful, no doubt, he does have the elder wand, immense years of experience and apperation, etc.
But considering Gandalf was in the choir that created the known world (i think, even if he only held the triangle), i have to tip the hat towards him. Even considering whats only in the lord of the rings books, Gandalf fights of the Nazgul atop Weathertop on his own, with lighting flying everywhere. He has the potential to great magic as well, but vowed not to use it to Manwe when he set off across the sea. Plus Gandalf fought the balrog in the lake at the bottom of moria, chased it up a massive flight of stairs for a couple of days then fought it again – i.e massive stamina.

K. Rowling and don’t see Gandolf as a deity or whatever he is so since when he battled Sarumon all they could do is push each other into walls so you think Dumbledore would win. My money is on Gandalf all the way. He has probably forgotten more useless spells that he doesn’t use anymore than Dumbledore ever learned. He is just that old. Because this is a theoretical fight, we have to asume that both fighters can use all of their skills and are not bound by moral issues. Gandalf directly defeats two demigods and indirectly deafets one if not the most powerfull demigod.There have been some bad arguments on Gandalf’s behalf though. For instance, I don’t think that he could break Dumbledore’s wand. He can back to stop Sauron and his alies. When he broke Sarumon’s staff he was removining him from the order. More or less de-godding him. That was using authority not power. Dumbledore isn’t in his order.

Dumbledore Had done things in his NEWT Exams when he was a boy which no other wizard has seen. He drank a killing potion that day to get a horcrux, so his body was rendered very weak and useless by the potion. Why Snape, even Malfoy could kill him in that condition.

that’s illogical, at least watch the HP movies and understand it before you say it’s a stick that was pointed at him. If you knew anything, Dumbledore chose to die, because it was the only way for Harry to succeed. So, before you ramble about things you don’t know, you should see both sides. Harry Potter universe holds that with a wizard’s death, all shield charms cast by him working at that time will be nullified.

Gandalf was based on a middle-earth universe (most probably in the pre-1940s) where the laws of their magic was different from the Harry Potter universe laws. So after Gandalf died in that time, Dumbledore came in 2000s. Both were excellent warlocks and fierce fighters but they just can’t meet.

Both are similar in that they stood for good until the end. I think Gandalf may have an upper hand after he dies and becomes a maiar, but Dumbledore can’t be defeated so easily because he has his own expertise and the Elder wand which amplifies the wizard’s power many times (and does not need a wand or words (voice) to cast spells and charms). Dumbledore defeated both Voldemort and Grindelwald, two dark wizards. Gandalf also has his own achievements besides fighting a dark lord Sauron. To me both have equal chance when they are alive.

Well the reason that gandalf didn’t take the fight ot Sauron is because when he and the other four istari (wizards) were sent to Middle-Earth, Manwe the Chief of the Valar forbade them from challenging Sauron power for power because it was a problem of Middle-Earth and it wasn’t his place to fix the entire problem. That would also be why they didn’t just send the ring over the sea and have it destroyed over there.

If he could do something like open a hole in the ground or snap the Elder Wand, then what stopped him from killing Orc armies with it, or even destroying the ring himself or taking it to the volcano himself instead of having a bunch of Hobbits do it. I’m not positive but I’m pretty sure he isn’t allowed to come back again as he was only brought back so he could help finish the mission.

Gandalf is only allowed to be in Middle Earth has a VERY power striped being, and not allowed to do certain things as much as he is to guide and help in small ways of protection and such. Now that is in his own world, if Gandalf and Dumbledore were to ever met, it would be in our world which is where Dumbledore is from, which would most likely leave Gandalf even less powerful then him being in Middle Earth considering he wouldn’t be a such an ancient being to our world and would probably take immense power to get to it in the first place, and he is FAR from his own source of origin.

Now people don’t put two cents in where you only argue one sidedly. Like don’t list facts about the one character but then none about the other. Like “Oh Dumbledore’s got the Elder wand, he wins!” “Gandalf is a Maiar and is immortal, he wins!” “Gandalf’s Maiar powers let him do anything!” <– all of which aren't true to the argument as a stand alone.

Gandalf may be immortal, but he died. Plain and simple do to his weaker state for being in the world. Even when he came back he was still not his full power, probably not even half, PROBABLY NOT EVEN A QUARTER OF HIS TRUE POWER… The fact is Gandalf would never be able to use his true power against Dumbledore, in Middle Earth he may just win, in our world Dumbledore wins. In beyond wherever Gandalf is when dead, Gandalf fucking stomps Dumbledore.

In our world I'm positive Dumbledore would win hands down, but Gandalf would live on in another way.

Not to sure if they fought in Middle Earth, but if Gandalf lost he'd live on.

In wherever Gandalf where is true belonging is, Gandalf wins but Dumbledore would never be there anyway.

when dumbledore dies, hes about 115. dumbledore has wanted to die since about the age of twenty, when he accidentally caused the death of his little sister. at the age of fifty, he was offered the position of minister for magic 3 times, without applying or becoming a polititan. it was pure reverance and reputation as the greatest wizard of all time. hes defeated the two most powerful dark wizards of all time, gained so much knowledge he needs a pensieve to keep it all in, and the second dark wizard he didnt even need to be alive to defeat! when he was killed, his wand was blasted out of his hand by a schoolboy, because he was basicly an old rag because of the killing potion. gandalf is the avatar of a miaia, so power was automatically given to him, but dumbledore has had to work for a century to become the legend he is. and in that century, hes done more than gandalf has in his entire career. dumbledore would just apparate behind him, and transfigure his staff into a raccon. then he’d   
just conjure a troll out of mid-air and dissaparate. done.

gandalf would block the avada kedavera and shoot dumbledore with lightning or a missle.

Three things could beat both gandalf and dumbledore…

3. Tebow

Well take into consideration not the fact Gandalf is immortal. He also killed a demon while he was mortal he died by a fall.. But his ass was kicked by Saruman. Gandalf has powerful spells he summoned a tidal wave when he wasnt even there… So he doesnt even have to be infront of his opponent. He did this when he was mortal ( i think) .. Dumbledore also has tough spells.. and hee could command a stone army that defended hogwarts…. so i think its tied.. they equal.  a good question would be Sauron Vs, Darth Vader
