Gandalf wins this one easy. He killed a fire dragon thing. Dumbledore gets killed by Snape pointing a stick at him.

    • richoryan

No way! Remeber Dumbledore will kill him with the killing spell advarda kedavera

      • Wwbandgeek4

Dumbledorecould not kill gandalf like this. Gandalf is a maiar and as such, is immortal. his true self cannot die, even if his body is destroyed. because of this, he would be able to come back and kill dumbledore even ifdumbledore managed to destroy his earthly body. In the end, Gandalf always wins

        • Just-hugo

nop, gandalf dies, his maiar lives, but is no longer gandalf

          • JK

That makes no sense. ‘His Maiar’ is not a thing. He IS the Maiar

        • Schnook

Gandalf can't just come back to life. That was a one-time deal. Gandalf is just as mortal as Dumbledore is, even if he is a Maia. Gandalf is more powerful than Dumbledore, but Gandalf limits his powers. He always did, and he probably would stay true to that principle even if he was fighting Dumbledore. Meanwhile, Dumbledore's powers are amplified by the Elder Wand. So they are probably both about equal in power. Dumbledore wouldn't use the Unforgivable Curses under any circumstance. However if they fought, I would have to assume that Gandalf would win, because he is a Maia. However, you can't just assume that Gandalf would be able to “come back” and kill Dumbledore. Illuviatar ressurected him to overthrown Saruman and continue his mission. He wouldn't do it just so Gandalf could kill somebody. Oh, and Dumbledore planned his death. He could've killed Snape, but he had a plan. He died willingly, not because Snape was more powerful than him.

          • Jrreo1177

Good answer. However as in such other arguments concerning Thor, Gandalf his a god and dumbledore is mortal. Game over. No ring, wand or invisible cloak are going to help him and las I heard he has no horcruxes. Game set match.

          • Nchlsldg

I agree that Gandalf may be more magically POWERFUL, but in a SINGLE BATTLE, the HP wizards have many more abilities, like TELEPORTING. Dumbledore may not eternally vanquish Gandalf, but in a single magical battle, Dumbledore would win.

          • David

That’s just simply not true, because Gandalf is not allowed to show the extent of his true power, so we really don’t know how powerful he actually is. Not to mention he is basically an angel and as such immortal.

          • wyatt halliwel

he is not a god in that nature though is he other wise he could just wave his hand and the war would be one the only thing that is godly is his spirit lives on if his body is destroyed which dumbledore could do he was shown much more destructive than gandelf

          • JK

He came back to overthrow Sauron, not Saruman.

          • http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.lam.9638 Jonathan Lam

However powerful The Elder Wand may be, it’s just made out of old wood as demonstrated by Harry at the end of Deathly Hallows part 2. A few quick snaps and it’s kindling for a fire. Don’t forget that Gandalf is also the wielder of the Elven ring of power of fire given to him at the end of The First Age of Middle Earth by Galadriel herself ; which he used for example to render Aragorn’s, Legola’s and Gimli’s weapons useless by over-heating them in The Two Towers as well as to light his pipe during the dwarve’s meeting in The Hobbit.

          • lotr

FOR YOUR INFORMATION , THE ELDER WAND WAS MADE BY MASTER OF DEATH ..

          • Sh4DoW x StoRm

It wasn’t just made by the master of death, it was made by Death himself.

          • jonathan lindstrom

dude, Cirdan gave gandalf the elven ring :)

          • Nick Mitsch

Yes but harry didn’t want the power any sane wizard/muggle/maia/ also only the owner witch at that time was harry could break it

          • Hp..wizards, try Magicians!

Actually he can, it was a one time thing that he came back to middle earth but any other time he would return to his homeland to be with his fellow godlike Miar.

        • wyatt halliwel

he would have to acquire a new body
if e was killed ones what makes you think he would win the second time
destroying a body is not very hard

          • Fuck Dumbledore

gandalf is over 2000 years old, he is a demi god, he only takes the form of a human to assist the people of middle earth. His unrestrained power can rival even sauron. Dumbledore wouldnt stand a chance

          • http://www.facebook.com/jonathan.lam.9638 Jonathan Lam

Actually if you count his chronological age since his first appearence in First Age 497 in the Simarillian to his departure in the Grey Havens to 1426 Third Age he’d be 7003 years old, plus three years after his reappearence in Return of The King. Also, if you were paying attention during RoTK’s original run in 0’3 some places like Target had promotional posters of Fellowship members in their lobbies. One said Gandalf The White: 7000 years old; Master Spellcaster; Sword & Shield to the free peoples of Middle Earth.

        • Nigga Lover

Gandalf isnt imortal, he just cant die from old age

      • Mitch04

ya but gandalf is a maiar and they are immortal

      • Star Killer

No Way Version 2.0, Gandalf can block he spell with another spells….
        DUH.

        • Star Killer

Lol just kidding with you man, but i stand with gandalf :)

        • wyatt halliwel

is the harry potter universe there were spells designed to brake shield spells … not in lord of the rings though so gandelf could not brake dumbledore’s shield but dumbledore could his

          • zak

but does dumbledore posses the elvan ring

      • Samtheman

Gandalf could not be killed since he is a maiar. Also Gandalf would cut dumbledore in half before he could say anything and I thought he wasn’t allowed to dark magic cause he’s a good wizard

        • The Dude

He can use dark magic if he wants to to, just because you use dark magic a tiny bit doesn’t mean you’ll become evil.

      • Nate Allen20

gandalf would block the avada kedavera and shoot dumbledore with lightning or a missle.

        • Narutopro28

One does not simply block an unblockable curse.

      • Atlantean233

Gandalf would finish Dumbledore before he could say aardvark…

        • lotr

with his fu**king poem spell ? HUH ? Haha , Hell no !..
DUMBLEDORE was capable to use NON VERBAL SPELL .

      • Fred

For avada kadavra to work, you have to really believe in it. Dumbledore just doesn’t have it in him to kill someone.

        • warlock

          Dumbledore did kill… Grindelwald.

          • jc

No he didn’t, he captured him and placed him in his own prison. Voldemort killed grindewald after he refused to tell him the last owner and location of the elder wand

          • warlock

Oh shit. And I call myself a Harry Potter fan. Let’s just say I was tired… ;)

      • Jsoccer625

Gandalf is a god and cannot actually die he is immortal

      • Gandalf

Gandalf can only be harmed by a Maiar or Anuir, so Dumbledore could not even hit him.

    • Vzoe28

dude…if you would actually read a book…dumbledore asked snape to kill him…

      • Rhiannon

Only because he was already dying anyway.

        • the_valeyard6

no, becauce if snape didnt kill him flathead wouldnt trust him completly

    • Hannah

dumbledore planned that, stupid. read a book.

      • MikeHunt

dumbledore did NOT plan that he would die…. he wanted to see his sister that had died so he put on the hallow which just so happened to be a horcrux… he only then devised the plan to plan his death once he realized he would eventually have died from the rings curse so he wanted to use his death as best he could

        • wyatt halliwel

that doesn’t make him less powerful it just showed he had one moment of weakness

          • Guest

Of course, when Gandalf died, he came back even powerful… Dumbledore just stayed dead.

          • lotr

            because he’s a DEMI GOD ..

          • kauic22

maybe because Gandalf is sort of god, but still I say that dumbledore is more powerfull

        • lotr

          HE PLANNED THAT !

          • eloh1m

Wrong, Gandalf is indeed a demigod (Maia) but he was brought back to life only because of the direct intervention of Eru (God in the LoTR universe).

If it weren’t for the intervention of Eru Gandalf’s physical body would have died and his soul would have gone back with the other Valar and Maiar who chose not to dwell in Arda.

          • Apo

Okay, so he planned to die while the world was in chaos. Did he come back again more powerful like Gandalf? No, he stayed dead.

    • Lazadam09

You can't compare that, Dumbledore asks Snape to kill him, so that Malfoy's soul is safe. They are two powerful wizards!

    • Dracolover

Dumbledore wanted to get killed by Snape. Snape had promised Dumbledore to kill him so Draco didn’t have to. Dumbledore knew he was going to die soon anyway because of the curse from Voldemort’s horcrux (the ring).

    • Savanna

dude. he let Snape kill him. it was planned.
      read the books.

    • Kiran Machiraju

Dumbledore Had done things in his NEWT Exams when he was a boy which no other wizard has seen. He drank a killing potion that day to get a horcrux, so his body was rendered very weak and useless by the potion. Why Snape, even Malfoy could kill him in that condition.

      • Kiran Machiraju

And besides, he planned that Snape must kill him to let Draco Malfoy not become a killer. That way Voldemort trusted Snape. Do not forget that Dumbledore actually beat the Elder Wand and won it in a duel. That is pretty powerful.

        • Ashton

I think both wizards have a good chance at winning because not only are they both extremely powerful but do have their weaknesses. For example Dumbledore I’m my opinion was to the right cause no doubt; but overly devoted which I turn is a distraction. And gandalf might be restricted by power but he does still have his minds and plans things out. Though he does that Dumbledore does that years in advance which is more so wiser than gandalf. And if gandalf did not have a staff he would be easily beaten even if he put up a good fight. Where as Dumbledore can perform magic regulars less if he had his wand or not and he can teal port. Also is does depend on which realm they are dialing in. Both would have the advantage is filed tn thief designated realms and vise versa. It could be obliteration one war or another it a tie.

    • Blahblah

that’s illogical, at least watch the HP movies and understand it before you say it’s a stick that was pointed at him. If you knew anything, Dumbledore chose to die, because it was the only way for Harry to succeed. So, before you ramble about things you don’t know, you should see both sides. I honestly think Dumbledore would’ve won, if he wanted to. But, at the same time I do not think he would’ve wanted to fight and kill Gandalf. He is just too good of a man.

    • Liv4_christ

I should like to tell you that Albus Dumbledore gave himself willingly to Severus Snape trying to turn Draco Malfoy to the good side

    • Jcones

He asks Snape to kill him stupid

      • Quasimonk

dolts, he asks to be killed because he was already dying from Voldie’s clever hex on the ring-stone. Voldie rules.

    • wyatt halliwel

      funny

    • Fatal

That dragon thing was a Balrog, an extremely powerful and ancient demon from the early days of Middle Earth. Both of their spirits were essentially the same, but I agree, Gandalf is quite powerful, and practically immortal.

    • I hate iamhumanboy

Hey shut up. They planned it out if you watched. Dumbedore could have destroyed snape. But if you had watched u would have known that. And that “stick” is a wand. You know it too, u are just trying to act cool. Dumbed ore is freaking awesome. So is gandalf

    • Samwise

      a fire dragon thing….leave now.

    • kaucic22

Dumbledore˙s plan was that snap kill him, because that was only way voldemort would not suspect in snape!

  • Maxim

Lol gandalf ftw he can summon eagles, defeated balrog and has had alot of combat experience.Dumbeldorecan cast alot of spells but he can do Your Staff is broken! to his wand and he can make himself a shield arount himself!

    So…..

    GANFALF FOR THE WIN!

    • Tablekorner

You’re an idiot. Dumbledore has a Phoenix as a familiar which can heal any wound, such as a fatal Basilisk poisoning from a bite. Dumbledore has the Elder Wand. Dumbledore IS the greatest wizard there ever was. Dumbledore do was a fucking genius as well. Dumbledore is like the greatest manipulator of all time.

  • law_9104

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?! Dumbledore is the most POWERFUL wizard! He had the fucking Elder Wand, which allows you to do your spells and makes them sooo much more powerful! And about Snape, he told Snape to kill him cause it was apart of the plan to stop Voldemort. Man get yo stuff skraight.

    • Wwbandgeek4

Unfortunately for your logic, Gandalf must be the more powerful of the two. He is a maiar, a minor god that existed before the world came to be. Dumbledore, however powerful a mortal being he is, is still mortal, and cannot defeat Gandalf, who is immortal. Also, the elder wand is no aid to dumbledore in this situation, because gandalf can destroy it with a simple phrase, or use one of his words of power, which would destroy dumbledore. in a fight, Gandalf beats dumbledore every time.

      • Just-hugo

the Maiar is imortal, Gandalf is not, and Dumbledore doesn't even need to use words to knock someone out. besides, like dumbledor says: “there are worst things than death”, there are many ways of defeating a foe.

        • Bungholesftw

all he would have to do is say silencio and Gandalf couldn’t recite his spells… Nuff said.

          • Yer23

Dumbass gandalf dosent utter a single word to cant a spell

          • Researchirs

You apparently don’t know how Gandalf casts his spells. Did you see him murmur anything when he blasted the Nazgul away with his light?

          • Spellmaster

Dumbledore just need to say *Imperio*. He can also cast spells without saying, just by thinking.

      • Scott

you see, the sitation isnt who would vanquish the other eternally and forever it is who would win in one battle. if you wanna get technical dumbledore exists in every picture he ever had taken of him or produced of him in the frog cards. also by DEFINITION, dumbledore cannot lose because of the elder wand. and even if gandalf COULD come back every time he was defeated itd just be the scenario: Frodo asks, “hey gandalf, you are back, how many times did he beat you this week?,” Gandalg replies, “only 14, but i think im starting to gain an edge on him.”

        • scott

Gandalf fights balrogs nazgul and hundreds of orcs in battle. he has a sick ass ring of power and a sword dumbledore has a cute little wand and fights one of his students he also isn’t immortal so gandalf would kill his ass then go throughout the world and destroy all the shit that dumbledore is on

          • Kiran Machiraju

A wand is not a cute little stick. It is a tool to channel all the wizard’s magical power.

          • cherpsonderps

Omg your a fag dumblederp was gay with harry and ron so slpoosh! hes a buster gandalf would beat his ass so hard hed probably go blind.

          • Comedicrick

“Dumbledore was gay with Harry and Ron.” Did I miss a book or something? XD

        • Researchirs

I suppose that Gandalf could say something like “Dumbledore, your wand is broken,” and the Elder Wand would never be the same again.

        • Morgoth

And tell me, how Dumbledore got the Elder Wand? He *defeated* the previous owner. So, “by definition”, doesn’t mean a thing. ;)

    • Narya ring

Gandalf have the ring of fire Narya,he destroy the balrog of morgoth alone, he broke Saruman staff, fought against the witch king, if Dumbledore fight against Gandalf,he will vanish completely…

    • lolindir

Yeah…. Remember when Gandalf burned everyone's weapons when he came back and came out? Yeah, do that with a magically imbued stick and it shatters. And just because he told Snape to kill him doesn't mean he's invincible unless he BEGS for death, it doesn't work that way. Gandalf rides giant eagles, the king of horses, bareback and talks to moths. He has balls of steel and is a minor god. No matter how great you are at magic, you can beat Gandalf. He's the Bruce Lee of magic.

      • Just-hugo

when you talk about Gandalf, you must separate his imortal beeing behind him, the Maiar. Gandalf is a shadow of a Maiar, with limited powers and a fisical, mortal body. so he can die.
Dumbledore, apparently doesn't need giant eagles or the king of horses too complete his goals (and actually doesn't even need to be alive).

        • Aceofspades9512

He doesn’t have nearly as limited powers as you think – he chose to limit them. That’s a different story. And while Gandalf was a physical manifestation of the Maiar, they’re still one and the same. Not different things at all.

      • Spellmaster

Dumbledore does not require giant eagles or horses, he can just apparate from one place to the other. And about speaking to bugs and moths He does not require to do that. And u said that “u can beat Gandalf” remember.

    • Fire ruben

Gandalf would whoop his old ass before he can say shit.

  • Kelly

Galdalf would win, except he never does sh*t!

  • Ella

Dumbledore would win. He has the elder wand, which can beat anything, not to mention he's already the most powerful wizard to ever live.

    • R o B x D

Ye but Gandalfs basically a God. Its like putting and angel from heaven against Kimbo Slice, Kimbo's one beast of a man but he could never beat an angel/god. !

      • Just-hugo

Gandalf is no god nor angel, the Maiar is. Gandalf is a fisical body with many restricions in power, and can die.

      • Kiran Machiraju

So is Gandalf a god born in human form?

    • Naryaring

The traditional wizards my friend has staffs and not wands, J.K transformed the wizards in fairies with this stupid story of wands.
With the Elder Wand or not he will die, Gandalf has a powerful Ring and is immortal, has a staff and kill many powerful enemies. If Dumbledore is the most powerful wizard to ever live, why he’s dead?

      • Bill

and to add to that gandalf never died when the movie finished he went to valinor to chill with the immortals

    • pbody

well the elder wand couldn’t beat harry s hand now could they

    • Researchirs

Apparently whoever said that didn’t revise his Middle-Earth history. (or hers, for that matter.)

    • anonymous

If Dumbledore beat Grindlewald when Grindlewald had the Elder wand wat mkes you think Gandalf can’t beat Dumbles

  • The Pwnious Monk

this whole argument is kind of bullshit. They come from worlds where magic works differently, so there would be universe-shattering paradoxes going on. however, assuming that each has access to the way of magic of both universes, and some time to practice opening the new magical doors, then i would say that Gandalf would win because it seemed like he had less to work with in Middle Earth, yet he was still a badass, so with new powers with a wand and shit, he would easily kick ass.

  • Filmer1995

Gandalf wins. Because gandalf is maiar, he is immortal and even if his body dies his spirit can not. He has powers dumbledor cant even dream of. He was restricted to use his powers in the books so if they did fight i think IIlvitar would let him use his full power and if that happened all the wizards in harry potter could not stop him.

    • Wwbandgeek4

I would def agree with thewhole Gandalf winning because he's a maiar, but as for Iluvatar letting him use his full powers I have two comments. one, I dont think he would need that much power to defeat dumbledore, what whith his words of power and ability to destroy dumbledore's wand like he did to saruman's staff. Two, I dont think it is Iluvatar who decides what Gandalf can or cannot do, I believe Iluvatar never directly interferes with the happenings of middle earth, and that manwe is the one who can order gandalf, being the one who knows best the will of Iluvatar.

  • Holmanmad111

Gandalf easily wins!!!Even though Dumbledore proved to me he is not a weak wizard, just like Voldemort and Harry Potter, they are still no match for Gandalf!!!Gandalf is Maiar, not a man and he is immortal and will always come back to kill Dumbledore, even Gandalf the Gray who lived over 21000 years would easily kick Dumbledore ass,due to expierience and level ge must have gained.Plus i think Gandalf can do magic that just blocks anything, that would block Avada kedavra and he can break a weaker staff, and i defenately think Dumbledores wand is weaker than his Staff and even if not,Gandalf will come back stronger as White or even stronger, until his staff is stronger than Dumbledores wand, and than he breaks it!!!Than he kills Dumbledore, who will not come back and gandalf wins at the end,no question!!!Saruman is also Maiar and has even bigger experience than Gandalf and used to be more powerful,so he is better competition for Gandalf that Dumbledore is!!!And Gandalf defeated Saruman!!!He also defeated Balrog!!!!He wins over Dumbledore and even over Voldemort!!!!!!

    • Just-hugo

your argument is a matter of believs and personal opinions, and lacks of reasons.

      • phillip

your upset he beasted it up right there

  • http://twitter.com/chocoholicarmen Carmen Bishop

Gandalf wins – Dumbledore can do many things, but HE CAN'T SPEAK MOTH.

    • http://twitter.com/RAVENCLAVV Hannah

      he can speak mer-language….
HE SHALL HAVE THE POWER OF THE SEAS!

    • Kiran Machiraju

Dumbledore knows about 200+ languages including mermish, elvish, Gobbledegook.

      • Researchirs

Dumbledore’s life is capped at a little above 100. Unfortunately,Gandalf has had 5000 years to master every language known to Middle-Earth and Numenor.

  • akashi

gandalf ofcourse… he is more powerful in strength and wisdom…

  • Jcase02

I think Chuck Norris would beat both of them… at the same time

    • Yoyoyiggityyo

      GTFO, PLEASE.

    • Lolindir

If you wanna throw Chuck Norris into this, then I can throw something in. Chuck Norris isn't living on Dracula's moon base, is he? NO! Bruce Lee is, but Dracula didn't teleport him there. Bruce Lee JUMPED to the moon. Who do you think taught Bruce Lee? GANDALF! Ergo, Gandalf wins against everything. Now go jump off a lake.

      • gandalfftw

Wow. That was epic! Virtual fist-bump bro! (or sis- I’m not sure which. lol)

  • Davor Ilic1996

dumbeldore would win…he has a part of a deathly hallows…the elder wand of one of the three brothers…death gave one brothen the wand and wen he died dumbeldore get it…now he fought voldemort many times and always win…dumbeldor was an only wizard that voldemort was afraid of…he can defeat gandalf…if you didnt know he can with the poewr of phoenix disapierd in flame…thats very powerfoul i think…i dont know how to write english much so i m sorry…..

    • Lolindir

Okay, Dumbledore lost even more than he has in the argument because of your TERRIBLE GRAMMAR AND SPELLING!

“.if you didnt know he can with the poewr of phoenix disapierd in flame”??? What the fuck is that right there? Dude, I don't need to tell how Gandalf is better at this point. Go soak your muddled head in boiling water. It might help you.

      • Lolindir

Nice try disguising your terrible spelling with the fact you don't know English very well.

        • Scott

how does this sound, instead of attacking a foreigner try wrapping your feeble little mind around this, the magic in the books of harry potter could either be so insanely devastating that Gandalf would stand no chance because it is so much more powerful than he could have ever imagined, or it could be so weak Gandalf was doing all Dumbledore could do and more at a very young age. There is no way to cross the lore or the level of power in the books, so by default it is impossible to tell which is more powerful.

  • Davor Ilic1996

    becouse im from croatia

  • Sam Kaetano

Off course Gandalf would win… Dumbledore is dead. affs But if doesn't compare both. No doubts! Gandalf is very, very, very, very, very powerfull than Dumbledore. I've read Lord of the Rings and HP's series, and obviously Gandalf 'd win.

  • Ladymupz

cmon ppl, smart ppl know that gandalf IS dumbledor!!! I mean we all know that when gandalf was gone during the 3rd movie he was at hogwarts saving the day, then asks snape to pretend to kill him so he can go back and defeat Sauron! Jesus!

    • lolindir

That doesn't work…(the last part about snape pretending to kill him) Gandalf clearly has no need to ask someone to do that for him. He can just poof between worlds like a boss. Besides, Hogwarts would crumble and implode by Gandalf stepping foot inside and being disappointed at how poorly the students were being taught. They must be purged…

      • Kiran Machiraju

        Spoilsport!

  • tsquare

Gandalf is the shit…what is the point of the argument.  A school principal vs a half god.  You decide.

    • Kiran Machiraju

You mean a genius and a would-be minister of magic (which he refused because of his family’s terrible loss) Vs a dead man returned as a maiar, he was not living…

  • Jundry

Jesus Christ. Anyone that thinks Dumbledore has an icy fighting chance in hell against Gandalf is foolishly mistaken. Honestly, if Dumbledore was half as powerful as you Potter fanatics (I’m a fan, but not a huge one by any means) would like to think, then why didn’t he face Voldemort and destroy him in his infinite wisdom and power? Dumbledore was an old man, and no wand can make an aging, senile wizard into a powerhouse.

    • Bangorang Peter!

gandalf would win yes, but you need to learn about both things before you go spouting off with uneducated comments.  Dumbledore WOULD have killed voldemort, but there was one problem, until all of the horcrux were found, voldemort would continue coming back.  Dumbledore took the curse of the first horcrux in his hand and it was going to kill him anyways.  Therefore he allowed himself to be killed to give harry and company more time to find the other crux’s and allow snape to look as if he is a loyal follower of voldemort, to gather inside info on where the crux’s are and so on.  Dumbledore knew harry would eventually find the other horcruxes do to him being mentally linked to voldemort’s soul.  Dumbledore’s time was up even before he died, and to die voldemort had to kill off the piece of his soul that was in harry.  Now learn to do your research before you talk of things you know nothing about.

      • Myfreespamguard

on the same token, why didn’t Gandalf just take out Sauron, who is on an equal plane (maiar) with Gandalf…

        • Tolkien Reader

Well the reason that gandalf didn’t take the fight ot Sauron is because when he and the other four istari (wizards) were sent to Middle-Earth, Manwe the Chief of the Valar forbade them from challenging Sauron power for power because it was a problem of Middle-Earth and it wasn’t his place to fix the entire problem. That would also be why they didn’t just send the ring over the sea and have it destroyed over there.

  • Gabriel

There are a lot of problems with this comparison. Gandalf, as “Olorin” in the Silmarillion is a Maia, basically a fairly wimpy lesser god. He is a “wizard” in the sense that he’s wise, or at least old and in possession of a lot of obscure knowledge. He’s good with fire, but he also wears Narya, the ring of fire – one of the 3 Elven rings of power. At no point does Tolkien make clear what magic specifically Gandalf can do. On the other hand, Dumbledore is capable of just about any magic that can be done, though he chooses to avoid dark magic. In terms of what they are specifically known to do, Dumbledore has a much MUCH greater known repertoire than Gandalf, who could retaliate with… what exactly? While Gandalf is immortal, his physical form can certainly be defeated, and was at least twice in the Lord of the Rings (once by the balrog, once by Saruman).
Tolkien’s magic and Rowling’s magic are two different things as well..

    • Oloff8

The whole thing is, Tolkien doesn’t get into so much detail about specific spells as Rowling. And, the Balrog didn’t defeat Gandalf, he ended up beating it.

    • Narya ring

Read the other commentaries above and then you will see how MUCH Gandalf is powerful, he kill’s every powerful enemy in The Lord of The Rings, about his powers and skills, read the Hobbit, so Dumbledore is so powerful that he dies by a potion teacher, his magic shield to protected Hogwarts was broken, none of Gandalf magics was broken by anyone, so if you really read the books, then you do not understand anything.

      • Kiran Machiraju

Dumbledore does not kill anyone but it does not mean that he is not powerful. He drank a killing potion that day to get a horcrux, so his body was
rendered very weak and useless by the potion. He was already dying. Why Snape, even Malfoy
could kill him in that condition.
And besides, he planned that Snape must kill him to let Draco Malfoy not become a killer. That way Voldemort trusted Snape.
Harry Potter universe holds that with a wizard’s death, all shield charms cast by him working at that time will be nullified.

      • Spellmaster

Dumbledore is not a killer like Gandalf The Murderer.

  • Oloff8

Well they both die in the end…but I would have to say Gandalf just because he’s a way better fighter than Dumbledore

  • Thomas

    Obi Wan Kenobi?

  • Freddie-Roe

Jus so people know, Avade Kedavra attacks the soul, not the body. Therefore Gandalf is immune to Avada Kedavra, his soul is immortal, But his body is prone, in which Gandalf has many Protective spells, Such as the The Flame of Arnor – as we see when he fights the balrog, such a beats couldn’t harm him when he used the spell. Gandalf also CHOSE to fall into the ravine with the Balrog, he could have easily pulled himself up, but chose to fall. Gandalf is a very powerful wizard, whop unforetunately we don’t see in action as we should. But considering he can break weapons with no problem, deflect spells with his hands, and is immune to fire spells, another expmple of where saruman fires a blast of fire at him and no damage is done. Gandalf would hands down win.

    • Alfa Nery

      Nice comment Freddie, ^^
Thanks to remember, gandalf wins (if he die he would come back from Palace of Mandos, just saying) =]

      • Scott

see, the problem is that gandalf was only brought back to defeat sauron, he didnt “make” himself come back to life. But in truth there is no accurate way to compare the two because the magic in the books of harry potter could either be so insanely devastating that Gandalf would stand no chance because it is so much more powerful than he could have ever imagined, or it could be so weak Gandalf was doing all Dumbledore could do and more at a very young age. There is no way to cross the lore or the level of power in the books, so by default it is impossible to tell which is more powerful.

        • Jesse

dude, gandalf wasnt brought back to defeat sauron cuz if he was, he would have defeated sauron. instead he beat the crap out of saruman and basically contrived the entire destruction of sauron through others. also, GIANT STAFF>skinny little wand. plus dumbledore is a stupid name derived who knows where. the name gandalf is derived from norse poetry. moral of the story? Gandalf always wins

        • gandalfwins

Dude, all the HP fans (and most of the LOTR fans) here are acting like Gandalf was killed and had to “come back”. Gandalf never died, but his body was destroyed, which obviously is fixable. Dumbledore could not do anything to touch Gandalf’s true being. Gandalf has power to withstand any magical attack, and also control his opponent’s entire body, not allowing them to even talk, and could also break Dumbledore’s wand very easily, rendering him powerless. If Gandalf’s body was destroyed, he still would not die, and also, he has immense powers that are never touched in LOTR. He could just use however much of his powers he needs to use to obliterate Dumbledore.

    • Kiran Machiraju

Avada Kedavra is a killing curse. Death is a state of the body not soul. The soul is immortal. Avada kedavra just makes the soul depart from the body.

  • Sam7ea

any way i like both of them they are special one
why dont u think like if  they are comes as one

  • Miniwoli

Dumbledore is powerful, no doubt, he does have the elder wand, immense years of experience and apperation, etc.
But considering Gandalf was in the choir that created the known world (i think, even if he only held the triangle), i have to tip the hat towards him. Even considering whats only in the lord of the rings books, Gandalf fights of the Nazgul atop Weathertop on his own, with lighting flying everywhere. He has the potential to great magic as well, but vowed not to use it to Manwe when he set off across the sea. Plus Gandalf fought the balrog in the lake at the bottom of moria, chased it up a massive flight of stairs for a couple of days then fought it again – i.e massive stamina.

  • Narya ring

Gandalf is The Best One Wizard.

    Gandalf rulee

  • Nathan

You guys made my day knowing that people are this serious about something like this is awesome.  I personally think that it depends on who’s made up universe you are in if you dress like harry potter when you go see the movies I think that you hold Gandolf to the British magic world standard created by J. K. Rowling and don’t see Gandolf as a deity or whatever he is so since when he battled Sarumon all they could do is push each other into walls so you think Dumbledore would win. But if are constantly trying on rings and preying you turn invisible, You probably hold Dumbledore to the middle earth standard and compare him to the deity that Gandolf is and you know that since Gandolf is a more powerful being he naturally is more powerful and would blow the shit out of Dumbledore. haha 2 awesome book series. I love them both I think next someone should write a logical explanation as to how Dumbledore and Gandolf are fighting each other and the reason they decided to fight.

    • Star Killer

Dude, Gandalf would return and kick Dumbledore’s ass, Gandalf is immortal >.<
      Gandalf, i stand /w u!!!

      • Scott

again, gandalf was only brought back to complete his purpose. it isnt like hes playing galaga and has an endless pocket of quarters. he wouldnt be brought back again just to kill someone. therefore that is an invalid reasoning.

        • Watcher198

Shut up little guy, at least he was brought back, and Dumbledore did not even returned from the world of the dead to protect that shit of Hogwarts that you Harry Potter fans like.

  • Watcher198

Gandalf is the best one wizard ever exist, he’s a maiar, he defeated the great Balrog, return from death, break Saruman’s staff, fought the Witch King and fought in the battle of Minas Tirith, fought in The Black Gate and ride Giant Eagles, has Glamdring, a powerful elven sword and has a great staff.

HE’S THE BEST ONE, In this poll i was thinking, who is Dumbledore when everybody said Gandalf’s name?

  • TheNash

The main arguments here are with Gandalf’s forms. To make the brawl clearer, we need to establish if we are talking about Gandalf the Grey, the White or his Maiar form

    • Watcher198

All of this options my friend

    • Jczreptiles

Gandalf is a maia in a mans body. Orloin is the maia form, the question wasn’t who would win Dumbledore or Orloin it was Gandalf or Dumbledore. They both have the same limits only Gandalf traveled everywhere on foot and was visible, Dumbledore could apperate and become invisible on this basis Dumbledore would win hands down, you can’t beat what you can’t see or catch.

      • Watcher198

You should be ashamed of such commentary, Gandalf fight against many powerful warriors, what Dumbledore does, only a Firestorm, and Gandalf is immune to fire.
Gandalf will fulminate this old prick headmaster.

  • Deathscion

well ppl gotta think Dumbledore is gr8 still he’s weak when compared to Gandalf  the Grey or the White.
he can illumunate with his hands can ride the horse king without seats, Eagle king. Moth, Dragon,he chases Nazgul with the light from his hand
he can break the staff of sarumon without even a spell, he motivates he fights, he guides he shines the path and it goes on.

whereas Dumby? jus a fucking wand neve comes to help turns up only after things r done?
before he says aveda kedavra he wld be hung up n destroyed to pieces he’s no match to Gandalf who defied the death

  • Osiris308

My money is on Gandalf all the way. He has probably forgotten more useless spells that he doesn’t use anymore than Dumbledore ever learned. He is just that old. Because this is a theoretical fight, we have to asume that both fighters can use all of their skills and are not bound by moral issues. Gandalf directly defeats two demigods and indirectly deafets one if not the most powerfull demigod. There have been some bad arguments on Gandalf’s behalf though. For instance, I don’t think that he could break Dumbledore’s wand. He can back to stop Sauron and his alies. When he broke Sarumon’s staff he was removining him from the order. More or less de-godding him. That was using authority not power. Dumbledore isn’t in his order.

  • NotAGuest

I’m pretty sure Zeddicus Zu’l Zorander would beat Dumbledore

    • Kiran Machiraju

      who is he?

  • bobII

i think that gandalf would win (i read both the series:)

  • Kiran Machiraju

Gandalf was based on a middle-earth universe (most probably in the pre-1940s) where the laws of their magic was different from the Harry Potter universe laws. So after Gandalf died in that time, Dumbledore came in 2000s. Both were excellent warlocks and fierce fighters but they just can’t meet.

Both are similar in that they stood for good until the end. I think Gandalf may have an upper hand after he dies and becomes a maiar, but Dumbledore can’t be defeated so easily because he has his own expertise and the Elder wand which amplifies the wizard’s power many times (and does not need a wand or words (voice) to cast spells and charms). Dumbledore defeated both Voldemort and Grindelwald, two dark wizards. Gandalf also has his own achievements besides fighting a dark lord Sauron. To me both have equal chance when they are alive.

    I love them both!

  • Kiran Machiraju

I sometimes think that both are the same person, seeing their similar personalities and honorable intentions.

  • Aeo211

Look at who they are up against. Dumbledore is against a pissed off former student who has no nose and turns hundreds of wimps into his magical Manson family, and his guys all get owned by school teachers and students. Gandalf is up against another white wizard whom he defeats and an all powerful dark lord with an army of Orcs and dragon riding badass screechy dudes. Only difference was Gandalf lived in the end. It wouldn’t even last 30 seconds, no matter what little funky word dumbledore says to shoot a light out of his magicy stick. Gandalf wins. End of story.

  • Jessica

This isn’t even open for discussion.
    Gandalf.
    There is no comparison.
Gandalf would win just because he’s Gandalf.

  • Atlas

OH FOR GOD SAKE!!! Dumbledore will win all the way:
    1) he’s got the elder wand
    2) he can perform a lot of energy forms
3 )he can cast the killing curse
    as for Gandalf
1)he’s got a staff(all he could do is to exorcist the king and make fireworks
and the most baffling thing is: if he was so powerful, why didn’t he use his magic in battles? or summoned his eagles? i was so frustrated.

Dumbledore let Severus kill him to allow Harry to kill Voldemort, save Draco from becoming a monster, gain trust of Voldemort towards Snape, and because, AND THIS IS THE BIGGEST REASON, he accepted death as an inevitable process on the road through a great journey. Dumbledore was one of the only three Masters of Death and accepted death.

Dumbledore may be a light wizard, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use dark spells and I wouldn’t be surprised to find out he has giving the manipulation the man has.

Gandalf may be a Maiar, but seriously. All he can do this or that blah blah blah with his power. If he could do something like open a hole in the ground or snap the Elder Wand, then what stopped him from killing Orc armies with it, or even destroying the ring himself or taking it to the volcano himself instead of having a bunch of Hobbits do it. I’m not positive but I’m pretty sure he isn’t allowed to come back again as he was only brought back so he could help finish the mission.

Gandalf is only allowed to be in Middle Earth has a VERY power striped being, and not allowed to do certain things as much as he is to guide and help in small ways of protection and such. Now that is in his own world, if Gandalf and Dumbledore were to ever met, it would be in our world which is where Dumbledore is from, which would most likely leave Gandalf even less powerful then him being in Middle Earth considering he wouldn’t be a such an ancient being to our world and would probably take immense power to get to it in the first place, and he is FAR from his own source of origin.

Now people don’t put two cents in where you only argue one sidedly. Like don’t list facts about the one character but then none about the other. Like “Oh Dumbledore’s got the Elder wand, he wins!” “Gandalf is a Maiar and is immortal, he wins!” “Gandalf’s Maiar powers let him do anything!” <– all of which aren't true to the argument as a stand alone.

Gandalf may be immortal, but he died. Plain and simple do to his weaker state for being in the world. Even when he came back he was still not his full power, probably not even half, PROBABLY NOT EVEN A QUARTER OF HIS TRUE POWER… The fact is Gandalf would never be able to use his true power against Dumbledore, in Middle Earth he may just win, in our world Dumbledore wins. In beyond wherever Gandalf is when dead, Gandalf fucking stomps Dumbledore.

In our world I'm positive Dumbledore would win hands down, but Gandalf would live on in another way.

Not to sure if they fought in Middle Earth, but if Gandalf lost he'd live on.

In wherever Gandalf where is true belonging is, Gandalf wins but Dumbledore would never be there anyway.

  • The1000pesoman

it really depends on if its gandalf the grey or white, because they both have different powers

  • Ryanbentley

when dumbledore dies, hes about 115. dumbledore has wanted to die since about the age of twenty, when he accidentally caused the death of his little sister. at the age of fifty, he was offered the position of minister for magic 3 times, without applying or becoming a polititan. it was pure reverance and reputation as the greatest wizard of all time. hes defeated the two most powerful dark wizards of all time, gained so much knowledge he needs a pensieve to keep it all in, and the second dark wizard he didnt even need to be alive to defeat! when he was killed, his wand was blasted out of his hand by a schoolboy, because he was basicly an old rag because of the killing potion. gandalf is the avatar of a miaia, so power was automatically given to him, but dumbledore has had to work for a century to become the legend he is. and in that century, hes done more than gandalf has in his entire career. dumbledore would just apparate behind him, and transfigure his staff into a raccon. then he’d
just conjure a troll out of mid-air and dissaparate. done.

    • Your mom

Three things could beat both gandalf and dumbledore…
      1. Ditka
      2. Honey badger
      3. Tebow

  • TheFanatic

Well take into consideration not the fact Gandalf is immortal. He also killed a demon while he was mortal he died by a fall.. But his ass was kicked by Saruman. Gandalf has powerful spells he summoned a tidal wave when he wasnt even there… So he doesnt even have to be infront of his opponent. He did this when he was mortal ( i think) .. Dumbledore also has tough spells.. and hee could command a stone army that defended hogwarts…. so i think its tied.. they equal.  a good question would be Sauron Vs, Darth Vader

  • Tristanrussell111

dumbledore is dead in the ground, therefore gandalf wins

  • Anon

Both Gandalf and Dumbledore are metaphorical figures for God (Tolkien is obvious; JKR made a statement). Dumbledore is the HP version of Iluvatar whereas Gandalf would only equate to one of three aspects of Harry (Christ). No, I am not making a statement on religion, but the respective authors did. So who would win? Neither, when you observe the same ideas as the authors, they would follow the theology that suggests that God is divided into the Godhead (Father, Spirit, Son) and if that is true then Gandalf who is an aspect of Christ who is represented by Harry who is the Son and Alter Ego of God who is represented by Dumbledore, then they’re all kind of the same person. And that’s that.

  • Lol

wtf… a bit ashamed of reading all the comments :)
but gandalf would win his magic shield protects him from all spells. So Dumbledor spells are useless. wahts left is a old man who may can counter gandalf spells. But even if he could do that gandalf kills him by knowledege and his sword. So Dumbledor would run for his life and gandalf wouldn’t give a shit because he’s legen… wait for it….dairy
and btw he’s a semi god

  • The Dude

Meh if they do ever fight, the whole world will fall to pieces and we will all perish. ‘Nuff said.

  • Jay-rod

if any of you guys read the hobbit you can see that gandalf is awsome at magic and melee attack. For example when they were attacked by the trolls bilbo woke gandalf and gandalf instantly killed like 7 goblins and killed the wargs with fiery pinecones. also in the misty moutains gandalf with only assintance from thorin killed many goblins in the misty mountains when it was almost completly dark. so what the crap is dumbledore gonna do wen gandalf blocks all his attacks and stabs him with glamdring? and gandalf could say dumdledore your wand is broken and poof dumbledore has no wand. and I agree with a comment I saw earlier GANDALF HAS BALLS OF STEEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Someguys
  • Xanimale

Gandalf would win easy.  He can say your staff is broken and break Dumbledore’s wand.  Also he has a sword and could chop Dumbledore in half if he got close enough.

  • Morpheus

    gandalf would won because

    Dumbledore: death makes him die

Gandalf: just comes back to kill the sh*t out of stuff

    • scritch

Aside fromthefact the Gandalf would clearly win (and not just from “coming back”), I’dlike to clear up something. Apparently, everyone seems to think that Gandalf has some “defined” power, or ability, to “break lesser staves”….this is NOT true. Before Gandalf died in his battle with the Balrog, he was Gandalf the Gray. Along with Saruman (and a few other wizards – Radagast and the two Blue Wizards), Gandalf was a group of Maiar who were chosen by their associated Valar to assist the people of Middle Earth in the war against Sauron. Saruman the White was labeled “the White” because according to rank, he was greater in wisdom and stature than Gandalf the Gray (Olorin was his Maiar name, whereas Gandalf was his”human” name). Both Saruman and Gandalf had been instructed to assist Men against Sauron (and I’d like to stress the word “assist” – it was not their task to “defeat” Sauron). However, Saruman was turned from his task, and had chosen to allie himself with Sauron. After Gandalf the Gray died in his battle against the Balrog (btw, the Balrog died first), Gandalf’s spirit returned to the Halls of Mandos, where Eru Illuvatar (the “God” of the LOTR series) allowed Gandalf’s spirit to go back to Middle Earth, thereafter he had been given authority over Saruman. Gandalf had essentially been “promoted” to be a higher rank than Saruman. As such, Gandalf was adble to “break” Saruman’s staff, as a display that he had risen above Saruman as a superior. It wasnot a general “ability” of Gandalf’s to be able to break staves, or break wands, or whatever. He was only able to do so, and to do it to Saruman, since it was sort of like telling Saruman, “you have fallen from your position as ‘the White’, and I have risen above you’. Breaking his staff was the proof of Gandalf’s authority over Saruman; it was basically like Gandalf was delivering the message from Illuvater that Saruman is no longer worthy of the power that his staff represented. Ok, now that THAT is cleared up…Gandalf would win (not necessarily easily) in a one-time battle, btw. And I’m not talking about the fact that they are both “good” wizards, and that they would be able to use each other’s magicor whatever. Simple rules….Gandalf has his powers, and Dumbledore has his powers. They both give it their all, without regret or personal restrictions. Gandalf would win, since he has potentiallyunlimited amount of power that resides in him. By the way, the Ring of Narya that he wears does not givehim any extra power. I’d like to clear that up as well. That ring was one of the three Elven rings that grants the wearer a certain ability. In this case, as is said in the book, the wearer of the ring “warms the hearts of those nearby”. This is a morale issue. This is why in the Battle at Minis Tirith (the white city), every time Gandalf rode by the troops, they stood up and felt emboldened. They didn’t explain this as good in the movies, but in the books, they went into further detail. The ring simply exerts a strong level of courage and “self-belief” around allies of the wearer….it doesnot give Gandalf any extra power per say (other than the potential idea that if Gandalf were losing against Dumbledore, he would be able to overcome the mental “depression” of the idea of losing….I.e he wouldn’t stop believing in himself – which is a very powerful thing in a fight, as any fighter knows). Ok…there! (said by another comment. eat that motherfucker. also, dumbledore kicks orc ass)

  • geeksquad09

Dumbledore got poisoned by that pipsqueek malefoy. Gandalf is totally mincing.  Yoda would F*!# em both up.

    • Jsoccer625

No Yoda would not because Gandalf is a God and immortal and has more power than either of them he just doesnt want to use it its stated in the books that he Frodo said he is scared of people who are to powerful like suaron and gandalf response your not scared of me right becasue i can be more powerful than anything

  • Lord Gandalf

Gandalf is a Maiar, and therefore cannot be killed. But, Maiar are pretty much lesser gods, and all 5of the Istari (the wizards) hax their powers significantly amped up. I think that would give gandalf plenty of power to deal with Dumbledore (a human wizard).

  • Lord Gandalf

yeah can’t die except saruman died from being stabbed in the back …. he can die he sole just lives on

      • Alex

Saruman wasn’t killed. He was transported to the Halls of Mandos in Valinor. After that i think that he was sent to the Void.

        • schwapj

Disagree. After he is stabbed by Wormtongue (in the book) his spirit looks to the west but is blown away by a gust of air, implying that the Valar have washed their hands of him.

  • Dominiclopez67

Obviously it be Dumbledore. After all he knows more spells than Gandalf, and all I’ve ever seen (and read) Gandalf do is just make short pretty light spells that do no damage (maybe some but still just little). Dumbledore is able to use protego to ward of gandalf’s spell and his wand is the elder wand so, Dumbledore rules!!!

  • Lord Gandalf

Gandalf does not only have light spell! He also has a shield spell, which he uses against the Balrog on the bridge of Kazad-dum, a fire spell which he uses to combat wolves in the hobbit and the fellowship of the ring and to light a bundle of wood to keep the fellowship warm, a lightning spell that he uses to kill some orcs in the hobbit and he uses it against Grima Wormtounge in the two towers, he also has a spell that csn push his enimies back, he uses that one against Saruman in Isenguard. He also mentooned a “word of command” that Gandalf used against the balrog in the rolm of Balin’s tomb, which shatters a heavy wood and iron door. He also posseses the ability to, as Toliken called it, “grow up to full hight ” hich inflicted fear upon his foes. And in the extended version of the second movie Gandalf charged his sword with lightning. I sure hope that all this will prove to you that Gandalf has a lot more than one spell and would eadily kill Dumbledore.

  • Lord Gandalf

Gandalf is simply the superior wizard. I hope that I have proven that to you with my last comment, it took forever to type. Also, please excuse me for all my spelling and grammar mistakes in my comments, I am probably not proofreading and am trying to type too fast. Gandalf is also way tougher than Dumbledore, Gandalf is constantly in the heat of the battle, with sword and staff in hand, and is way more resistant to damage. Gandalf also fell down into the depths of the pit of Kazad-Dum with the balrog and then fought with him for three days and three nights, that proves you have some constitution. Dumbledore, on the other hand, is a frial and delicate person. It would takke a lot more to kill Gandalf than to kill Dumbledore.

  • Lord Gandalf

By the way, I am not meaning to say that I don’t like Dumbledore,,just that I like Gandalf more. Dumbledore is the second best wizard out there. But Gandalf is still better.

  • Lord Gandalf

Why is no one else commenting? Is it because no one can find a flaw in my arguement?

Ok…there!

    • scritch

wow. you’re totally right. but i still think dumbledore kicks ass and would give it his all in any fight.

  • Lord Gandalf

you know what?I am constantly trying to tell everyone that Gandalf broke Saruman’s staff because he was banishing him from the order, he does not have the natural ability to break staves. It is good to know that there is someone else supporting me in my argument. Another way Gandalf could take out Dumbledore is mele. As soon as Gandalf got in close with Glamdring, the battle is over. He could just use his shield spell to portect him as he runs up to Dumbledore (to all you dumbledore fans, dumbledore couldnt just run away, Gandalf would catch up, Dumbledore isin’t particularily fast) and then slice him to peices. Gandalf is a particularily good fighter, but Dumbledore is a frail old man (even though he is probably around 100, and gandalf spent at least 3,000 years on earth, and probably in his millions, if you count the time he spent as a maia, since he was created when Eru first shaped the world).

  • Isaaaci543

yeah what happened when he fought the balrog? he came back with a brighter cloak this would probably happen again

  • BenChan

    |Let’s think. Gandalf managed to defeat a giant beast, but it dragged him down with him into a pit of fire, he came back even better. Dumbledore was killed by one if his own members of staff. I think Gandalf has got this one easily!

  • wyatt halliwel

what is the point of this thread any way all it will do is set fans against each other cause arguments and upset people

  • stubblyrabbit16

Gandalf lives all through Lord of the Rings… Dumbledore doesn’t even try to fight back against snape.

    • scritch

it was all planned you motherlicker. read the fudging books

  • Thwomp

If its Dumbledore versus Gandalf the Grey it’ll be a very even fight. They both have similar levels of ability, although Gandalf has lived for far longer than even Dumbledore has, being a Maiar. Wizards in the Lord of the Rings were lesser gods, they were incredibly powerful…but Dumbledore could I think easily trade blows with him. Despite Gandalf’s inherantly higher power, Dumbledore’s sheer variety of techniques and ingenuity more than make up for his mortality.

Now if its Gandalf the White we’re talking about however, I’m afraid Dumbledore doesn’t stand a chance. Rejuvinated, slightly younger, and with sharper fighting skills, he combines all of Gandalf’s immense knowledge and magic with a much stronger body.

  • Hammurabi

Yeah, because Dumbledore’s never dealt with someone who comes back from death.

    Oh, wait…

The whole ‘Gandalf can come back from the dead’ thing is pointless. Besides, this is about who would win in a fight, and I think that’s easily Dumbledore.

  • Gmorbgmibgnikgnok

Gandalf fought a Balrog and came back from the dead.

Dumbledore got a kid to do his fights.

  • bob

I would say that Gandolf the Grey would loose but Gandolf the White would win. I was always under the impression that Gandolf the White was extremely powerful, even though they didn’t display him really doing much in the films.

    • Scritch

      Gandalf not gandolf

  • Sigmon Freud

This argument is stupid. The fact is, if they dueled, Dumbledore would win. People are so quick to say Gandalf because of the movies, and people have no idea how skilled Dumbledore is in the books they never read. There’s a few things to consider, the main argument for Gandalf is YA WELL HE’S MAIAR SO HE WINS. DONE. Well, bad excuse, we’re talking about who would win the battle, not who lives longer. If Dumbledore defeated Gandalf he can’t just come back, he was put on earth for the SOUL PURPOSE to defeat Sauron, Also Gandalf is by nature more powerful than Dumbledore, but not as skilled. Dumbledore has an inconceivably deep arsenal and understanding of magic backed up by the elder wand carved by death itself. Who would win this fight – a big guy with a heavy punch, or a ninja who can disappear in the blink of an eye, reappear behind the big guy suffocate him. This is exactly what Dumbledore is like, he can apparate, meaning he can vanish and appear anywhere he wants, and also knows occlumency, the ability to get into and read someones mind. If Dumbledore really wanted to, he could even use the imperius curse and make Gandalf kill himself. Or when all is said and done, he could just avada kedavra him and the story is over! So at the end of the day, Dumbledore with his elder wand and insane knowledge of magic, and far far far FAR superior intelligence, he would win the battle. Now I am not biased in any way, I have read both series multiple times, and Dumbledore truly is the better wizard, even if Gandalf has more power. I love both series more than any other fantasy world, both equally, but honestly Dumbledore would win in a fight.

    • Scritch

      WOOHOOO DUMBLEDORE ALL THE WAAY!!
gandalf’s alright too, but he’s gay for dumbledore

  • dwightshrute

    HAHAHAHA this argument is funny

  • LordGandalf

Gandalf may not totally outmatch Dumbledore in spell ability, but you need to add in the factor of melee. Gandalf is a very deadly fighter with Glamdring, his sword. If Gandalf got up close with Glamdring, the battle would be over. Gandalf rules!!

  • Wolverine

Gandalf would kick Dumbledores butt. First of all he’s immortal and second of all who names a wizard Dumbledore? Oooh watch out for “Dumbledore”. What a Dumbledork! Ha ha ha. I’m hilarious.

  • wizards eat dick91

    NERDSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!

  • J Doe

Hard call, going back a little in harry potter order of the phoenix dumbledore defeated Voltamort. However in the Hobbit half way through the book Gandalf left, it was rummored he and a group of others fought and defeated Sauron. I think they are both equaly powerful and it would be a toss up to who ever got the upper hand first.

  • Beau

All that Dumbledore would have to do it cast avada kadavra. The magic in Harry Potter is far far beyond and is not-comparable to Lord of the Rings. The wizards in harry potter are capable of almost anything.

Sad, but simply true based on any form of logic.

  • Gimli

all the comments of gandalf won’t use his true power are dumb, gandalf only limits his powers because his mission is to let d kingdom of men rule middle earth by defeating sauron, but he will still use his powers when really needed, like when he knew that balrog was beyond the powers of anyone else and was going to kill the fellowship he used his true powers and ultimately beat the balrog, who at that time killed entire dwarves of mora including their king balin, so gandalf killed the ancient monster whoo killed entire legions of dwarves, and yeah if he can break the staff of the eldest istari(SARUMAN) who was sent by the valar himself, he can surely break the puny elder wand of a headmaster who teaches magic in a fort. So if dumbledore fights gandalf the grey he might apple to teleport and get away with his life but if he dare to fight gandalf the white, then not even with the aid of harry boy and volde”alien”mort will he be able to win. On other note both of them are good so i don’t think even if they met they will fight, only if one or the other turns evil

  • Chunkychoc

If they fought like men without magic gandalf would knock dumbledores glasses off and make him cry like an old man that’s wet himself…

  • duffy potter

DUMBLEDORE WOULD TOTALLY OWN GANDALFS ASS!!!!!

  • joking420

You all mention about Gandalf’s ability to come back to life but before gifting it to Harry, Dumbledore had the resurrection stone and the elder wand. This made him powerful and allowed him the ability to come back to life so given we say both. Wizards have that ability, it should kinda cancel out that Maiar argument.

    • RandomJoe

The Resurrection stone was proven *in the book* to be just an illusion based on the memories of the one holding the stone. It doesn’t actually bring a person back to life.

  • Creepyvegan

Gandalf would kick dumbledores but, he is a maiar, a spirit sent to help shape the world. He holds a lot more power than dumbledore. He is an amazing sword fighter and if he died, he would come back more powerful, as you see in the transformation from grey to white. He is far more knowledgeable than dumbledore. The fact is, dumbledore is still just a human, powerful, but human.

  • yourGoD

Gandalf is awesome, I suppose that if dumbledore was fighting Gandalf the grey it would be even but u have to think dumbledore has a vast knowledge of spells but Gandalf has more it may not seem like it but he is a wizard that’s thousands of years old so even though they don’t show much it is probable that he has more knowledge.

  • Tulkas

Ok, putting apart every argument about the mortality/inmortality of Gandalf and how he was weakened, lets say a couple things:

1- Gandalf, in his weaker form (the grey) defeated a Balrog. Balrogs are corrupted maiars, minor gods. He defeted him even when he was “tired” (if you read the book, there was no problem for gandalf fighting a balrog, but he had used most of his energies defeating an orcs army). Can Dumbledore defeat a god?

2- Ok, Dumbledore gets the most powerful wandsin HP universe… to make it fairer, let’s give Gandalf one object wich is even not the most powerful object in Middle Earth. The One Ring. Half of the power of Sauron… that’s all Dumble

3- Dumbledore can be a better magician, but Gandalf masters not only magic, but sword fighting and psychology… he could make Dumbledore to kill himself…

  • TheDuckFanboy

Everyone is wrong. Gandalf was an eternal/omnipotent spirit called Olorin. Then he took the form of man so he gains trust from humanity to try and save Middle Earth. Gandalf can still call upon/revert his form to Olorin and have access to infinite power against Dumbledore.

  • TheDuckFanboy

Therefore Gandalf will win 99.9-repeating% of all battles with Dumbledore.
Get owned Potter-fanboys, one Wizard to Rule them ALL

  • matthew choi

Gandalf would win since Dumbledore is bad at attacking

  • LordGandalf

Gandalf would toatally win. He is a god. He would crush dumbledore.

  • Voiceofreason

All you dudes who say that gandalf wud win are wrong. He has limited powers. Dumbledore could stun him and then hide him in a closet. Duuuh

  • JAson

Gandalf is an Anur, hes a practically demigod, even if dumbledore kills him, he will come back to life infinite times, while Dumbledore is mortal

  • King Lyon

Gandalf FTW but this is a close fight, don’t underestimate Dumbledore so easily

  • Guest

    Ganda

  • Daniel Sweet

Gandalf is a very powerful wizard. So I vote him, although I’m not too sure what Dumbledore is capable of.

  • Abby

We’ll never know who‘ll win. Dumbledore died, and he knew he was going to. He wasn’t afraid(though he must’ve been frightened a little), because he isn’t scared of dying. Death is just a part of life. He said so in the first book, ‘To the well organised mind, death is but the next great adventure.’ And he isn’t really dead, he’s in Limbo, as we learn when Voldemort kills Harry. He isn’t dead nor is he alive. He can’t come back alive and he can’t die. Anyway, Snape told Dumbledore that Voldemort had told Narcissa and Lucius to make Draco Malfoy, their son, a Death Eater like them. This made them worried about what might happen to Malfoy as he was in such a dangerous situation, so Narcissa and Bellatrix made Snape seal the Unbreakable Vow to protect Malfoy. Malfoy had no choice, because this is VOLDEMORT I’m on about. He’s a raging, psychopathic sadist and when he wants something done, you don’t disagree, ESPECIALLY if you’re one of his followers. If Malfoy didn’t come onto the Dark Side, Voldemort would kill him and his parents. So Dumbledore guessed correctly that Voldemort would order Malfoy to kill Dumbledore to make Malfoy a proper Death Eater. His fears were confirmed when he knew Malfoy was behind all the attacks that were aimed at him but didn’t actually make their target, and instead hit other people. Dumbledore was the master of the Elder Wand, the most powerful, invincible wand in the world, no magic could defeat it. Dumbledore realised he was dying because when he put on the Horcrux(the ring), the curse attacked Dumbledore, so the curse blackened his hand and he was going to die. He put on the ring because the stone that was inside it, was actually the Resurrection Stone. He wanted to see his family and apologise and talk to them, after the whole Grindelward fight. He forgot that the ring being a Horcrux, was very likely to have a curse around it, in anticipation of the hope he could see his family, finally happy and whole. He only told Snape who helped slow Dumbledore’s death, but the curse had already ‘settled’ and there was no way of saving Dumbledore. Snape said that he had around a year or so to die. So Dumbledore decided to figure out the Elder Wand problem as the Elder Wand is one of the Deathly Hallows, and that’s the Hallow Voldemort was really after. He didn’t really care about the Invisibility Cloak as he thought it wasn’t important or the Resurrection Stone because of his fear of death and his inability to love and give affection. Dumbledore had an idea, that maybe if Snape killed him, Snape would become the master of the Elder Wand, and it might weaken the power of the wand. However, when Malfoy used the Expelliarmus spell on Dumbledore, because he disarmed him, he unwittingly became the master of the Elder Wand. As Malfoy disarmed Dumbledore before Snape killed him, Malfoy became the master, not Snape. Obviously, when Harry fought Malfoy’s wand of him and took it at the Malfoy Manor, Harry then became the master of the Elder Wand. When Harry found that he was a Horcrux and in order to save the world from Voldemort and his Death Eaters, and for Voldemort to die, he would have to be killed by Voldemort, Voldemort took the wand. Harry didn’t fully die, because in the fourth book, when Voldemort rose again, he used some of Harry’s blood to come back to power. Because of that, as nobody had yet defeated Voldemort properly(only Harry could do that because of the prophecy), Harry was still tied to the earth because Voldemort was still alive. Voldemort and Harry had the same blood inside themselves, the Dark Lord himself was still alive, and so Harry could still survive. Dumbledore can’t defeat Voldemort for good. Only Harry can. In the fifth book, when Dumbledore tells Harry about the prophecy he heard(The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches…born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies…and the Dark Lord shall mark him as his equal, but he shall have power the Dark Lord knows not….and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives), which basically means that Voldemort couldn’t kill Harry because of how powerful the ancient magic love protected Harry, when his mum died for him and that in the end, only Harry can kill Voldemort. So yeah. I LOVE The Lord of the Rings btw, it’s just that I’m a bigger fan of Harry Potter. My heart will always go back to Harry Potter. But honestly, Dumbledore would never, EVER fight Gandalf. They’re both amazing wizards, and aren’t stupid enough to fight.

  • idgaswuscuab

i love both but i never see gandalf use magic

  • Lux0rbis

dumbledore has to say words to cast spells which takes time. gandalf does not need to chant he can simple use his powers at will. as soon as dumbledore starts waving his wand and saying a bunch of words, gandalf would instantly throw a barrage of spells into his face.

  • xingfenzhen
  • shafi

Dumbledore has a bigger variety of spells to kill him

  • jonathan

iv’e been checking the comments for a while now and some people have just said “dumbledore can just use avada kedavra to kill gandalf” but lets be realistic here, i mean dumbledore is the last wizard to ever use that kind of spell /kill anyone. as for gandalf, his powers were restrained in his human form during the entire trilogy and never used much magic, other than lighting up a few trees and breaking a few stones, so i think a battle between these two would be very boring to watch, since none of them would do anything conclusive. but if i have to vote, i vote for gandalf, since he is a fucking demi-god and even though most of his powers were restrained he still has some skill and his knowledge is far greater than dumbledore.

  • Bitcomer Orth

dear people, gandalf would win..he is a majar and this means his magic is way more powerfull than dumbledore
ps: actually they are both good so they wouldn’t fight each other

I never saw enough power from Gandalf in LOTR. Wizarding in middle earth seems like a modified version of the force.

  • studicus

gandalf has magic and can fight with a sword

  • GandalfFTW

I couldn’t really imagine a situation in which Dumbledore and Gandalf would actually fight, as they’re essentially the same person. They both mostly work behind the scenes for the cause of good, manipulating Gondorians or Wizards in subtle ways for their own good. Gandalf is from a low-magic universe, meaning we rarely see what he is capable of, and in Dumbledore’s world wizards can’t piss without using magic to flush. I’d still throw my pointy hat in with Gandalf, as Glamdrang, a Ring of Power, his staff, and being a minor god are pretty badass bonuses. Gandalf has shown the ability to protect himself from magical attacks as when he confronted the Balrog and Sauruman after his tower was destroyed, and seems to be a big fan of lightning bolts and killing things with swords.

  • random

    gandelf

  • J

Dumbledore can conjure far more grand spells and his power is of a much higher scale, look at what he did in the Horcrux cave for example (even in his depleted state) with all that fire, Gandalf can just about set alight to a pinecone. Gandalf was not nearly as powerful as a grey wizard and even as a white wizard he can pretty much only blind his enemies or knock them flying. Although Gandalf comes back after dying, Dumbledore is not completely dead either, as Harry encounters him later on. Dumbledore also chooses to die whereas Gandalf is actually defeated. In a brawl, Dumbledore would undoubtedly win

  • Ultron

Now I’m a huge fan of both series but I’m going to fight with my knowledge of the books rather than the movies. I think there is one thing that can put this whole argument to rest. It’s that gandalf is not as powerful as everyone thinks. I’m going off of the books here people. In the movies he is seen as more of a badass but when I first read through the Hobbit many years ago, I came across a quote that still remains with me to this day. It’s during the battle of 5 armies in “The Clouds Burst” chapter. “Gandalf, too, I may say, was there, sitting on the ground as if in deep thought, preparing, I suppose, some last bit of magic before the end.” HE WAS SITTING ON THE FUCKING GROUND. IN A HUGE BATTLE! Wtf! That’s weak as hell. He couldn’t even think of the limited magic he had so he had to sit down on the ground and think, “Hm, what should I do now? I don’t know very many spells so this may take a while.” If Dumbledore was in a battle you best believe he would be at the front knocking bitches down and wouldn’t just be some side detail. He would be the star of it. Not just, oh yeah, he was there sitting down because he was stumped on magic. Dumbledore’s knowledge of magic is FAR superior to that of gandalf’s because dumbledore doesn’t need to give magic a second thought. He is the most powerful wizard of all time and would kick gandalf’s wrinkly ass. And not to mention he has the elder wand. If that’s in his control, there is no defeating dumbledore. He could just apparate behind slow ass gandalf and avada kedavra him into mordor. Dumbledore is a badass and is more intelligent, especially with magic, and would destroy gandalf. Plus Gandalf isn’t invincible. He died once fighting the balrog (sad) but only came back because his mission in middle earth wasn’t finished. The ring is destroyed. He can die now. Avada Kedavra.

  • Nicolas Terrie

Okay, so this is what I think: Dumbledore and Gandalf would fight for maybe 1 minute when realising both their magic works different. Then they would probably sit down, have tea and discuss the matter of life :)

  • DJApok

Forget the fact that Gandalf’s Maiar is immortal. This is ability vs ability ONE time. ONE fight. Yes Gandalf defeated the Balrog but that really just shows that he is good with a sword. The vast amount of spells Dumbledore is able to use will undoubtably stronger. I am a fan of LOTR as a book and movie series more but Dumbledore is more powerful.

  • RandomGuest

    Gandalf won

  • idk

Personally, I think that if the two wizards ever met, they would not find themselves in a large quarrel and then battle it out to see who would emerge the victor, rather they would probably go on a very long walk, sharing stories and laughing and by the end of it all they’d probably be quite good friends.

  • mindrig

Honestly gandalf has killed a baurog, is a demi god, has the fire ring ,and if dis armed he can still fight with tbe ring and a sword. Dumbldore’s best accomplishment was win a duel to get the elder wand. Gandalf will dis arm him and then what he is gonna do teleport gandalf to death. But in real life they would most likely become great friends and gandalf would bring dumbldore into smoking

  • poop in my cereal

i like gandalf and dumbldore but gandlaf is cooler though dumbledoore would win. he could teleport and use so many spells with his vast knoledge of magic wal gandlaf is less magicaly powerful but is very powerful in his own respective universe.

They would have lots if bearded old man sex.

  • john johnson

why, in the name of Salazar Slytherin, these two woulf fight?

  • Merlin

Gandalf is a Demi-God wizard who can kill a giant corrupt god (Balrog) in single combat. If gandalf dies he simply comes back to life. Dumbeldore is a gay kiddie fiddler with the personality of a paint bucket. Ive seen both Lotr and HP and i can tell you that the wizards in harry potter are closer to souped up, top hat magicians than actual staff wielding badass wizards of legend…like merlin, but even he would get killed by gandalf.

  • Hello Moti

Harry potter fans are just butthurt that every time this argument comes up Gandalf wins, hell bloody Radagast the bird shit faced wizard could kill Dumbeldore because even he is a.. GOD learn the word you forehead scar licking numptys.

  • The One above u

Dumbledore has the more potent magic abilities… BUT, Gandalf can just use his Ping of Power to overheat DUMBledore’s wand. He then proceeds to slash DUMBledore with Glamdring.

  • LordGandalf

Here’s the question. Is Dumbledore fighting the spirit (Olórin) that is Gandalf’s true form, or is he fighting his human form? If it is his human form, his powers are limited and he can be killed, so Dumbledore would win, but if he is facing the true form of Gandalf, he would be obliterated. The acts shown in LOTR are only a small portion of Olórin’s true power.

  • lotrhp

They are pretty much the same person so I don’t really see that this is necessary

  • John

    Totally Gandalf.

  • Kat

Gandalf would win. He is simply more powerful. He didn’t use the fullest extent of his powers in LotR because he knew the others could do it. He wanted to prepare them. Plus, the great creator, Eru, didn’t want him to use his powers all willy-nilly. (Did I also mention he is basically a demigod?)

  • Rob

Gandalf hasn’t performed as much magic or wizardry as Dumbledore. Now nearly any spell Gandalf would perform Dumobledore would block it. If you have seen any of the harry potters you will have seen that the Killing Curse is unblockable. A little Avada Kedavra with Dumbledore pointing his wand at Gandalf would easily kill him.

  • Rob

    Dumbledore did plan his death

  • Rob

Dumbledore would win. Dumbledore died and planned his death and there are many spells which would kill Gandalf then petrify him. Plus Dumbledore can disparate.

  • Brittany Bolander

You know I know nothing about lord of the rings and everything about Harry potter and even though I really would want dumbledore to win, I think gandolf would instead. Dumbledore is still a badass though!

  • Lewis

This is one of the hardest questions to answer. Two child hood hero’s of mine in a brawl. Skill wise, even though both wizards, their magic is very different. I am picturing in my head Dumbledore vs Voldemorts battle at the ministry, but then I also can’t help but think of how Gandalf sing handedly took down all the trolls. When it comes down to it, I say gandalf, because when he died, he pulled a not dead, where as Dumbledore could not do so.

  • jimmy no clue

none of the films ever show gandalfs true power dumbledoor would kill gandalf the grey but the white would tear him in two and i doubt the two would ever fight tho a tagteam match between dumble and ganny vs sauron and voldy

  • Mike B

Gandalf is almost a God. Dumbledore is a mortal playing at magic. Gandalf defeated a Balrog and resurrected as Jesus Christ in the flesh.
